IC16-5 - 16x16 Strip Transmission Ion Chamber
Description
The IC16-5 is a compact, thin-film transmission ionization chamber for real-time beam position and shape monitoring in particle beam lines. Two orthogonal 16-strip cathode planes at 3mm pitch sit inside a dual ionization chamber with a 48mm x 48mm sensitive area, so a single compact device reads out beam position and profile on both axes at once.
Built from polyimide film electrodes with aluminized coatings, the IC16-5 keeps its total beam-path thickness under 130 micrometers water equivalent, minimizing scattering while withstanding continuous exposure to therapy-level beams. It is compatible with protons, deuterons, and fully-stripped carbon from 30 to 500 MeV/nucleon, at beam current densities up to 20nA/cm2, with position accuracy better than 50 micrometers integral linearity and gain uniformity within ±2% across the sensitive area.
At just 32mm window-to-window, the IC16-5 adds minimal length to a beamline. It includes integrated temperature, pressure, and humidity sensing for gain correction, plus a field-replaceable desiccant sachet for chambers operated sealed from atmosphere, and runs on either atmospheric air or a flow-through fill gas such as Ar/CO2 or N2.
The strip readout connectors are pin-compatible with the I3200 electrometer for direct cabling, and the IC16-5 also pairs with the higher channel-count I6400.
