Pulse counting registers individual detection events one at a time rather than measuring a continuous signal, which makes it well suited to low-rate or single-particle-event applications where you want to count discrete hits rather than an averaged current.

They're built to pair with sodium iodide and lanthanum halide scintillators, as well as photodiodes.

It's the ability to distinguish real detection events from noise or unwanted signals (typically by pulse height or shape) so the counter registers only valid events.
